Etymology[edit]
From a³¹- + pʰau³⁵, in which the root is from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pəw (“price”) (whence the verb pʰau³⁵ (“expensive”)), with a nominaliser a³¹- added. Cognate with Burmese အဖိုး (a.hpui:, “price”), Old Chinese 寶 (*puːʔ, “treasure”), Nuosu ꁌ (pu, “price”), Tangut 𗗦 (*phə¹, “price”), Tshobdun tə́-pʰu, Drung aŋ³¹ pɯ⁵³ (“price”) and Jingpho hpu (“price, expensive”). Compare Lhao Vo aphug', Zaiwa apau and Lianghe Achang a³¹ pʰau³⁵.
