Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German āl, from Old High German āl, from Proto-Germanic *ēlaz. The umlauted form Éil (instead of expected *Ol) was probably first restricted to the plural, then generalised, and finally restricted to the singular by creation of the double plural Éilen.
