From Proto-West Germanic *abagrundī. Cognate with Old Saxon afgrundi and Old High German abgrunti; also, inexactly, with Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐌲𐍂𐌿𐌽𐌳𐌹𐌸𐌰 (afgrundiþa). Equivalent to æf- +‎ grynde.
