According to Beekes, a foreign word, probably of Oriental origin. Compare Arabic زِنْجَفْر (zinjafr), related to Persian شنگرف (šangarf) from Old Persian 𐎿𐎡𐎣𐎲𐎽𐎢𐏁 (s-i-k-b-ru-u-š /⁠sinkabruš⁠/, carnelian), of unknown origin.
