Disputed:

• Traditionally has been compared to Ancient Greek ἀκτέᾱ (aktéā, “elder”) (per Miklošič), however, the phonetics do not match;
• Per Berneker: possibly of Proto-Slavic origin, related to *xobotъ (“proboscis”), equivalent to *xab- + -ъд (-ǎd).

Cognate (via other suffixes) to dialectal Serbo-Croatian абда／хабат (“elder”), Slovene habát／həbȃt (“elderberry”).
