From *araqï (vodka), from Persian عَرَق ('araq, alcoholic drink), from Arabic عَرَق (ʕaraq, raisin loquor), from عَرَّقَ (ʕarraqa, water down, dilute a drink).

Cognate with Kumyk гьаракъы (haraqı, vodka), Karachay-Balkar аракъы (araqı, vodka), Southern Altai аракы (arakï, vodka), Khakas араға (arağa, alcoholic drink), Tuvan арага (araga, vodka; wine), Yakut арыгы (arıgı, wine).
