Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bažati (to desire, to crave). Cognate to Belarusian бажа́ць (bažácʹ), Czech bažit, Russian бажи́ть (bažítʹ). Compare the names of Old East Slavic origin: Бажéн (Bažén) and Бажéна (Bažéna), from Proto-Slavic *baženъ (desired).
