From Proto-Slavic *bud- / *but- + -цам (-cam, expressive verbal suffix) (cf. бо́цам (bócam) < бода́ (bodá, to pierce), кле́цам (klécam) < кля́кам (kljákam, to squat)). Akin to English beat.
