Etymology

Derived from the zero-grade form *(s)kr̥- of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut; to poke; to bite), extended similarly to пъ́рля (pǎ́rlja) vs. па́ря (párja).

Cognates include Macedonian крлеж (krlež), Serbo-Croatian крљ, крља, крлич and Aromanian cãrlej.
