Inherited from Old East Slavic смородъ (smorodŭ), Proto-Slavic *smordъ; cognate with Ukrainian смо́рід (smórid), Belarusian смо́рад (smórad). Doublet of смрад (smrad), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
