Borrowed from Middle Persian [Term?] (/⁠barnāmag⁠/), from 𐭬𐭣𐭬 (QDM /⁠abar⁠/, up, on, over) + [Book Pahlavi needed] (MGLTA) / [Book Pahlavi needed] (nʾmk' /⁠nāmag⁠/, book, letter), perhaps after Ancient Greek πρόγραμμα (prógramma, written public notice, edict), from προγράφω (prográphō, to set forth as a public notice), from προ- (pro-, before) + γράφω (gráphō, to write). Compare modern Persian برنامه (barnâme).
