From the older form طاقوق (takuk), from Proto-Turkic *tiakïgu (hen, fowl); cognate with Azerbaijani toyuq, Bashkir тауыҡ (tawıq), Chuvash чӑх (čăh), Kazakh тауық (tauyq), Kyrgyz тоок (took), Tatar тавык (tawıq), Turkmen towuk, Uyghur توخۇ (toxu) and Uzbek tovuq.
