[edit]From Middle Persian *nōl, found borrowed in Aramaic נַוְולָא / ܢܰܘܠܴܐ (nawlā) (meaning in Judaeo-Aramaic “loom” and Classical Syriac “beam”). Ultimately via the expansion of the drawloom westwards in Roman times from Proto-Dravidian *nūl (“thread”).
