Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (kurbag). Akin to Old Armenian կրպակ (krpak), Arabic كُرْبَق (kurbaq), قُرْبَق (qurbaq), كُرْبَج (kurbaj), Iranian borrowings. Cognate with Old English hwealf (arched or vaulted covering).
