Inherited from Old Hindi करवा (karavā), from Prakrit 𑀓𑀟𑀼𑀅 (kaḍua), from Sanskrit कटुक (káṭuka, pungent, bitter). Cognate to Gujarati કડવું (kaḍvũ), Marathi कडू (kaḍū).
