Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Urdu ماہ‌جبیں (māh-jabī̃), from Classical Persian مَاه‌جَبِین (māh-jabīn, literally moon-like forehead), from Classical Persian ماه (māh, moon) + Arabic جبين (jabīn, forehead). The intial e-vowel forms may be via an intermediate Hindustani مہ‌جبین / महजबीन (mah-jabīn), which often vocalizes the cluster ah as êh.
