Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *eḷ-ney which inturn is from Proto-Dravidian *eḷ (sesame) + Proto-Dravidian *ney (oil, ghee), meaning sesame oil after undergoing a semantic generalisation at the Proto-South Dravidian stage. Cognate with Kannada ಎಣ್ಣೆ (eṇṇe) and Tamil எண்ணெய் (eṇṇey). Equivalent to എൾ (eḷ, sesame) +‎ നെയ് (neyŭ, fat, oil, ghee).
