From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s(y)awk (“breast; to suck, drink”) (STEDT). Compare Chinese 欶 (shuò, sòu, “to suck in”). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “Is the "ray of light" meaning from a different root?”)
