   • 1864 July 14, “Flat Surface for Corn”, in The Summit County Beacon, volume 27, number 1, Akron, Ohio, page [4]:

     It will be evident […] that the practice of constructing large conical hills around the plants, on land which is light and dry, must inevitably tend to increase the effects of drought, inasmuch as it exposes much more surface to the atmosphere, and consequently increases aerifaction at times when all the moisture in the soil is required for the support and sustenance of the plants.
