From Proto-West Germanic *ambahtī, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją (derived from the root of ambiht (Etymology 1)), whence also Old Saxon ambaht, Old High German ambahti, ambaht (German Amt), Old Norse embætti, Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌱𐌰𐌷𐍄𐌹 (andbahti).
