From Proto-Germanic *uzsehwaną, equivalent to ā- +‎ sēon. Cognate with Old Frisian āsiā, Old High German irsehan, Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐍃𐌰𐌹𐍈𐌰𐌽 (ussaiƕan).
