Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Malay jurubahasa (interpreter), from juru- (expert) +‎ bahasa (language). The first element was derived from Javanese ꦗꦸꦫꦸ (juru, expert), from Old Javanese juru (head, leader, chief; tradesman), while the second element was derived from Sanskrit भाषा (bhāṣā). The pronunciation was possibly conflated with hasa. Compare Maranao diyarobasa and Tausug julbahasa.
