Etymology

From Middle High German sien, north-western variant of sehen, from Old High German sehan, from Proto-Germanic *sehwaną. The prefix ge- spread from the past participle to the infinitive, probably to distinguish it from sinn (to be), and was eventually generalised in all forms.
