From dialectal and archaic helq, from Proto-Albanian *(w)alkja, from *h₂wolkéye-, causative of Proto-Indo-European *h₂welk- (to pull) (compare Lithuanian velkù, Bulgarian влека́ (vleká, to drag), Greek αυλάκι (avláki, furrow)).
