Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Hindi जुगाड़ (jugāṛ, joining or union), English yoke. There are similar idioms in the Dravidian languages, for example, Malayalam thattikootu (put together), Malayalam oppeeru (fixing or getting), or Tamil மழட்டு (maḻaṭṭu, to distract), Telugu ఉపాయము (upāyamu).

It is pronounced as jugaad or jugaadh in Hindi, while in Punjabi and Urdu it is pronounced as jugaar, with a hard r sound that can be misunderstood by non-native speakers as jugaad.

Another view is Sanskrit युक्ति (yukti, a solution (to a problem)).

jugaad (plural jugaads or jugaad)
