From Proto-Malayic *kunit (compare Indonesian kuning, Malay kuning), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *(ma-)kunij (compare Acehnese kuneng, Javanese kuning, Madurese koneng, Sasak koning, Sundanese ᮊᮧᮔᮦᮀ (konéng), West Coast Bajau kuning).
