From Proto-Celtic *natrixs (compare Breton naer, Irish nathair), from Proto-Indo-European *nh₁trih₂ (compare English adder, Latin natrīx (water snake)), from *sneh₁- (to spin, twist) (compare nyddu). Related to noden (thread), nodwydd (needle).
