From Middle English pine tre, pynetre, pyne tree, pyn-tree, pintreow, from Old English pīntrēow (pine tree), also as pīnbēam (pine tree, literally pine-beam), equivalent to pine +‎ tree. Compare West Frisian pynbeam (pinetree), Dutch pijnboom (pine tree).
