Verb
[edit]stöta (present stöter, preterite stötte, supine stött, imperative stöt)
- to make a short, sharp relatively straight-motion impact, like when using a pestle to pound, stubbing a toe, hitting someone with an elbow, or pushing someone away with a rapid motion of the hands; to hit, to pound, to knock, to stub, to push hard, etc.
- to meet, to run into (stöta på, emphasis on på)
- Jag stötte på en bekant nere på stan
- I ran into an old friend in town
- (colloquial) to hit on (someone), to flirt with (someone) (stöta på, emphasis on stöta)
- (often in the present participle "stötande") to offend
