Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch wierooc, from Old Dutch wīrōk, from *wīh (holy) + rouc, *rōk (smoke), equivalent to Proto-Germanic *wīhaz + *raukiz. Compare German Weihrauch. The diphthongisation of -ī- (as in related wijden) was hindered by the following -r-.
