According to Ante Aikio (2020), from Proto-Finnic *äisäk (see Võro äisäq), from Proto-Uralic *äńćä. This suggests a development from *äisäk > *äisäk(k)V- > *äiskV- > *eskV-/äskV-. Related to Karelian äsken, Ludian äskei, Veps eskai, Moksha äźkä.
