From earlier *quš, from Proto-Turkic *kuĺ (bird). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰴𐰆𐰽 (qus¹ /⁠quš⁠/, bird), Khakas хус (xus), Tuvan, Southern Altai, Kyrgyz куш (kuş), Karakalpak қуш (quş), Bashkir ҡош (qoş), Tatar кош (qoş), Kumyk, Karachay-Balkar къуш (quş), Uzbek qush, Azerbaijani quş, Crimean Tatar, Turkish kuş, Turkmen guş, etc.
