From *qūrut / *qūrt (cheese in round balls), from Proto-Turkic *kūrï- (dry).

Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (qurut, qurut);[1] Tatar корт (qort), Kazakh құрт (qūrt), Kyrgyz курут (kurut), Uzbek qurt, Turkmen gurt, Khakas хурут (xurut), Tuvan курут (kurut, dried cheese).
