Ottoman Turkish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *bek (“firm, solid”), whence also Ottoman Turkish پك (pek). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (bekle-, “to protect, keep an eye on”), which preserved the original meaning. See also the second and third usages, in which the original meaning is also preserved.
