Etymology[edit]
Likely from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suck”), related to دا. Cognate with دایه (dâya). An indication for this is that the local Persian dialects of Gīlân use this word to mean both 'mother'/'wet nurse' and 'sister'.
