From Proto-Pathan *doy, borrowed from Classical Persian داد (dād),[1] from Middle Persian [script needed] (dʾt' /dād/, “law, justice”), from earlier [script needed] (dāt), from Old Persian 𐎭𐎠𐎫𐎶 (d-a-t-m /dātam/, “law”), from Proto-Iranian *daHtam, from Proto-Indo-European *deh₃- (“to give”).
