Inherited from Sanskrit स्वप्न (svápna), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *swápnas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swápnas, from Proto-Indo-European *swépnos, from *swep-.

Cognates include Latin somnus, Ancient Greek ὕπνος (húpnos), Old English swefn, and (English sweven). Doublet of خواب (xvāb).
