Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kapgak (cover); cognate with Azerbaijani qapaq, Bashkir ҡапҡас (qapqas), Kyrgyz капкак (kapkak), Southern Altai какпак (kakpak), Turkmen gapak, Uyghur قاپقاق (qapqaq) and Uzbek qopqoq.
