From Proto-Pathan, metathesis from an ancestral Middle Iranian form *ral,[1] from Proto-Iranian *HraθiH (“chariot”), feminine of *Hráθah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrátʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *Hrót-h₂-os, from *Hret- (“to roll”).
