From Middle Persian kpwt' (kabōd, blue-gray; pigeon), from Old Persian 𐎣𐎱𐎢𐎫𐎣 (k-p-u-t-k /⁠kapautaka⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *kapawtakáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kapawtakás, from *kapáwtas (grey-blue). Cognate with Sanskrit कपोतक (kapotaka, pigeon-coloured), Old Armenian կապուտակ (kaputak) (an Iranian borrowing).
