From Aramaic גְּרַע (gəraʿ).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (standard) IPA(key): [ɡɑːreʕː]
  • (Nineveh Plains) IPA(key): [ɡaːreʔ]
  • (Urmian) IPA(key): [d͡ʒɑr.reʔ]

Verb[edit]

ܓܵܪܹܥ (gārēˁ) (present participle ܓܪܵܥܵܐ (grāˁā), past participle ܓܪܝܼܥܵܐ (grīˁā))

  1. (transitive) to shear
  2. (transitive) to clip, crop
  3. (transitive) to shave (facial hair)
  4. (transitive) to give a haircut, procure a haircut see usage notes
  5. to trim, cut trees or shrubs

Usage notes[edit]

(to give a haircut, procure a haircut) This is not simply used for trimming or cutting a section or sections of hair off, with which ܩܵܐܸܨ (qāˀiṣ) would be used, but rather, shaving the hair using hair clippers (not necessarily fully). Thus, this is almost used exclusively for men, as women tend to only trim or cut sections of hair, and not use hair clippers or shave off any hair.
