Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘠𑘰𑘽𑘪𑘜𑘹 (dhāṃvaṇe), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀥𑀸𑀯𑀇 (dhāvaï), from Sanskrit धावति (dhā́vati), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *dʰā́wati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰā́wati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéw-e-ti, from *dʰew- (to run, flow). Cognate to Konkani धाव्चे (dhāvce), Bengali ধাওয়া (dhaōẇa), Persian دویدن (davidan).
