From a verbal derivative of Sanskrit पक्व (pakvá, ripe) (whence पक्का (pakkā, ripe; firm)). Cognate with Punjabi ਪੱਕਣਾ (pakkaṇā) / پَکّݨا (pakkṇā), Saraiki پَکَّݨ (pakkaṇ), Gujarati પાકવું (pākvũ), Nepali पाक्नु (pāknu), Bengali পাকা (paka).
