Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mr̥ȷ́ʰúš, from Proto-Indo-European *mr̥ǵʰús (“brief, short”), formed from the root *mreǵʰ-. Cognate with Latin brevis (“short”), Ancient Greek βραχύς (brakhús, “short”), Russian бо́рзый (bórzyj, “swift, brisk”).
