From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyaȷ́nás. Cognate with Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬯𐬥𐬀 (yasna, act of worship), Latin ieiunus (fasting, abstinent), Persian جشن (jašn, festival). The Sanskrit root is यज् (yaj).
