Etymology 1[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣɔːkᴰᴸ⁴ (enclosure for animals), from Middle Chinese (MC kowk). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩕᩬᨠ, ᨤᩬᨠ, Lao ຄອກ (khǭk), Tai Dam ꪁꪮꪀ, Shan ၶွၵ်ႈ (khāuk), Tai Nüa ᥑᥩᥐ (xoak), Phake ၵွက် (khok), Ahom 𑜁𑜨𑜀𑜫 (khok). Cognate via Chinese: Saek กฺ้อก, Zhuang gog, Zuojiang Zhuang hog. Possibly doublet of คุก (kúk).
