From Old Khmer ថ្នល៑ (thnal), ត្នល៑ (tnal), ត្នល្ល៑ (tnall), ត្នោល៑ (tnol), ថ្នោល៑ (thnol, access, especially causeway, inlet, or road over an embankment). Cognate with Modern Khmer ថ្នល់ (thnɑl), Lao ຖະໜົນ (tha non), Northern Thai ᨳ᩠ᨶ᩻ᩫᩁ (tà nǒn).
