Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡapᴰˢ⁴ (narrow; tight; confined) (Jonsson, 1991), from Proto-Tai *ɡapᴰ (tight; narrow), possibly from Middle Chinese (MC heap) (which became doublet of ແຄບ (khǣp)).

Cognate with Thai คับ (káp), Northern Thai ᨣᩢ᩠ᨷ, ᦅᧇ (kab), Tai Dam ꪁꪚꪾ, Shan ၵပ်ႉ (kâ̰p), Zuojiang Zhuang kaep.
