Proposed to have derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ̀-lɪ̃, see there for other cognates, cognate with Igala ẹ̀lẹ̀, proposed to be distantly a Doublet of erin, as they both are believed to be from the same root as proposed Proto-Volta-Congo *-ni, and ultimately Proto-Atlantic-Congo *-nani.
