Folk etymology states it comes from a Contraction of Ọ̀ṣọ́wùsì, ultimately from ọ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) +‎ ṣọ́ (“to guard, to watch”) +‎ wùsì (“to grow in prominence or influence”), literally “The warrior that grows in prominence”
